View Full Notice → C.R. “Bob” Bowen – April 14, 2013 — – C.R. “Bob” Bowen of Amarillo, Texas died Sunday, April 14th, 2013 at Ussery Roan Texas State Veterans Home. Memorial services will be at Boxwell Brothers Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., on Wednesday, April 17th at 3pm with Kurt Oheim officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 pm on Tuesday, April 16th at Boxwell Brothers. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors. Mr. Bowen was a native Texan, born in Waco and a resident of Amarillo since 1945. He graduated from Baylor University in 1940 with a B.A. degree in journalism. In high school he and a friend worked for a weekly newspaper in Marlin. They became publishers of the paper in 1934 and, at sixteen, were recognized as the youngest publishers in Texas by the Ft. Worth Star Telegram. When he entered Baylor in 1936, he worked at night as a print er on the university’s daily paper for four years to pay for his education. Following graduation, Mr. Bowen worked as a reporter for a daily newspaper in Gladewater, Texas. He later became editor of an award winning weekly in Cleveland, Texas and an area reporter for the Houston Post. I n the spring of 1941, he joined the area staff of the NYA in Lufkin. A month before Pearl Harbor he joined the Army Air Corps for flight training in California and Phoenix. He received his commission and wings on May 21, 1942 and was assigned to two weeks of P-40 fighter training. He was assigned to Alaska and the Aleutian Islands as a combat pilot. In 1943 he became a P-38 Photo Reconnaissance pilot and was assigned to combat in the fall of 1944 in Italy until the war in Europe was over in 1945. Mr. Bowen was separated as a Captain and Flight Commander in July, 1945 and came to Amarillo in September as a civilian instructor at Amarillo Air Force Base. In October he began his 35 year career with Shamrock Oil and Gas (later Diamond Shamrock) in the Advertising Department. He established publication of the company’s popular magazine, “The Shamrock”, distributed throughout its regional marketing area for 22 years. He became Director of Public Relations, Advertising and other Company communications, the position he held until his retirement in 1981. In 1947 he was a charter member of the Advertising Club of Amarillo and served in every official capacity. In 1975 the Ad Club honored him with a Silver Medal Award for community service and later with a life-time membership. He served as President and board member of the Southwestern Industrial Editors Association and was recognized with a life-time membership. Also he served as an officer and/or board member of Polk Street United Methodist Church; McDavid Men’s Sunday School Class; YMCA; High Plains Food Bank; Girl Scouts; Discovery Center; Salvation Army, Amarillo Convention and Visitors Board and “Mayor” of the Idlewild, New Mexico Community. In retirement he worked part-time in Public Relations and Advertising. He wrote numerous historical stories descriptive of pen and ink sketches by noted Southwestern artist, Harold Bugbee. Sara Lewayne, his wife of 47 years, predeceased him in 1997. Also predeceasing him were his brother, A.E. Bowen and a sister, Jimmie Lou Kitch of Grundy, Iowa. Survivors include three daug hters, Jan Reid and husband Tommy, Ann Palmer and husband Randy of Amarillo; Pat Knipe and husband Ben of Houston, one sister, Joe Ann Borland of Nashville, five grandchildren, Nick Reid and wife Reba of Houston, Christy Moore and husband Shawn of Amarillo, Betsey Palmer of Chicago, Merri Palmer and Addy Palmer of Amarillo and seven great grandchildren, Rylie, Brynna and Dylan Reid, and Garrison Foster, Troxell and Lena Anna Moore. In lieu of flowers Bob’s life may be honored by memorials to the Ronald McDonald House, Westminster Presbyterian Church and BSA Hospice. His family would like to thank all the wonderful caregivers at Ussery Roan, BSA Hospice, and Park Central who loved our daddy and Grandear. She and her husband, Ralph lived in Gruver, Texas for 15 years and then moved to Guymon, Oklahoma where they lived for 30 years. They moved to Amarillo in 2002. Phyllis was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amarillo. Phyllis was a wonderful mother and a good friend. She had a great sense of humor, was an excellent seamstress and bridge enthusiast. She was preceded in death by her husband William Ralph Mathis in 2003. She is survived by her two daughters, Kitty Elizabeth Mathis-Shildt of Goodyear Arizona, Anita Kay Bryant, of Houston; her two grandchildren, Victoria Ann Bryant and William John Bryant; a sister, Geraldine Stringfellow of Midland, Texas; and a brother, Charles Simon of Maineville, Ohio.
